Technology leaders face a twin challenge — staying at the forefront of technology and keeping up with advancing management practice. With faculty who are leaders in advancing technological knowledge and studying and shaping best practice in business, EMTM puts you at the front of both these streams of knowledge.
Core fundamentals + wide range of electives. EMTM offers a foundation of knowledge in technology and business that can be expanded in many directions through a wide range of electives. Approximately half of EMTM courses are taught by Penn Engineering faculty and half by business school faculty from the Wharton School and other graduate business programs. (See Degree Requirements for more on EMTM's curriculum structure.)
Customized technology courses in multiple disciplines from Penn Engineering. You're not here to learn coding. Technology courses look at key concepts relevant to understanding and managing different technologies in a business context. With EMTM's 6-course technology requirement, you can focus your tech electives in a specific cluster, or gain exposure across multiple technologies. Areas include: Biopharm & Biotechnology; Energy, Sustainability and the Environment; IT & Telecommunications; and Nanotechnology & Materials Science.
World-class business courses designed for technologists. Core courses and electives cover vital aspects of successfully deploying modern technology, managing people in a technology-driven firm, and managing innovation and entrepreneurship in any organization. Originally drawn from traditional MBA offerings, core courses and management electives are tailored for EMTM's schedule and focus.
Ahead-of-the-curve insights from research and industry leaders. EMTM's Emerging Technologies Seminar (ETS) keeps you up-to-date in subjects beyond course offerings. The year-long ETS features 90-minute seminars led by faculty drawn from across the university, as well as executive guest speakers.
Opportunities outside the classroom. Learning doesn't stop at the classroom. EMTM provides the means to address a broad range of management development needs through an array of workshops which includes sessions in Project Management, Business Plan Writing, and Management Communications, along with sessions on Managing Intellectual Property, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Venture Capital. There is also a hands-on, multi-week career development series. Each year, EMTM students and alumni have the option of participating in a full-credit elective as part of the Global Immersion Trip. These are all examples of extracurricular offerings that form an integral part of Penn's EMTM experience.
