Tapping into Current Thinking
In a large global consulting company, Beth Steiner found that the best way to stay competitive was to update her education in both technology and management. "I had an MBA in accounting, but after several years I realized it had become somewhat outdated. I was also limited on the technical side and given the breadth of customers I work with, it's important for me to have an understanding of many different technologies and industries. Going back to school was a way of tapping into current thinking and ensuring that my career progressed." Before enrolling in EMTM, Beth worked in various senior level financial positions before transitioning her career into software implementation and consulting with SAP America. After completing the EMTM program she was able to advance into her current role where she supports SAP's largest global providers of outsourcing services.
"What attracted me to EMTM was the blend of technical engineering with business. I knew I would gain the technology context to help our customers make informed decisions, understanding both the risks and rewards of a solution," says Beth. "Outsourcing, for example, has become a hot topic over the last three to five years, and an efficient software solution can make it even more compelling. Our outsourcing partners are early adaptors and we need to be able to provide a cost-effective, standard solution, with multi-language and multicurrency capabilities, across multiple industries."
Classes like Management of Technology and Strategic Management of Innovation gave Beth the tools she was looking for. "These EMTM classes, specifically as they relate to project portfolios and new technology adoption, have been critical in working with BPO providers who are always looking for operational and cost efficiencies." Even with an MBA, Beth found the finance classes helpful in evaluating implementation and support costs for customers. "Typically these are multi-year contracts with many aspects to be considered, and the finance courses updated and sharpened my financial analysis skills."
Beth also found that the program helped her develop the softer skills needed to work with SAP's executive clients. "I can more effectively communicate with my clients in writing and EMTM's emphasis on teamwork among the seasoned professionals in the program enhanced my work as a consultant. Clearly my degree has helped me. My clients have confidence that I am well positioned to work with them. But the real value is in being able to understand and deliver optimal solutions to meet their business challenges."
